The Comics Factory Goes to Woodbury!

Greetings from Woodbury!

On a recent road trip we stopped by the small town of Senoia, GA, better known now as Woodbury from The Walking Dead. While we didn’t run into The Governor or take out any zombie hordes it was really cool to see how much of this town remains dedicated to the show even while they aren’t shooting. The town hall remains untouched, local residents leave their lawns unmowed, when requested, and as you enter Main Street you are greeted by the Bank of Woodbury.

Being such big fans of the comics and TV show, it was a pretty awesome feeling to be walking around this quaint little town. Of course we didn’t have to clear any guarded barricade but what you see on the show is really how it looks. Sure they use clever camera angles and props to create a reality needed for the show but the only things you really have to imagine are some more trees and the vegetable gardens that run down the middle of Main Street.

Being from South Florida I must say that the best part of this day was the people. It was so refreshing to go somewhere as a stranger or tourist and be welcomed with such genuine courtesy and kindness. Senoia is a pretty popular filming location for movies and TV, so I am sure that the residents are used to visitors coming through and the additional commerce must be good for the town. That being said, I think there is still a different attitude that runs through these parts of the south and the rest of small town America. A true sense of friendliness that was much appreciated.

One of the things that makes The Walking Dead such a great show is the sense of realism that draws you deeper into it. A true testament to this is as we walked the back streets of Senoia and drove back to the highway as the sun was setting, my wife and I both commented on the slight feeling of fear creeping up our spines as night closed in. Even though there was no zombie apocalypse raging around us there was still a faint thought that around the next turn, stumbling in the woods, out of the corner of our eyes, we would spot a Walker.
